Courses

In addition to what you can find on this website, there are several ways to increase your knowledge and skills in Corporate Actions. Please find below a list of Qualifications and institutions with which you can follow courses and get your knowledge certified.

It can be a little bit difficult to understand which courses are offered and by whom. In general there are three different types of Courses in which Corporate Action material is discussed;

  • Study syllabus, sit exams and get certified aimed at the individual
  • 1 or 2 day introductory courses with several participants
  • Online courses with video material

Anybody with knowledge about corporate actions can teach this to others. There are several companies that offer for example 3 day courses in conference centres or hotels. Courses can be tailored to the client’s needs.

Investment Operations Certificate (IOC)

This is a course for newcomers to the financial services industry in which you can learn the basic concepts. The programme consists of 5 levels:

1) Foundation Level

2) Qualifying Level

  • When entering this level, there is a selection from a large number of options which reflect the specialist areas of financial services operations and administration in which staff work. The option focussing on corporate actions is called “Asset Servicing (Corporate Actions)”.

3) Advanced Level

4) Post-Graduate Professional Level

 Officially this programme is from the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments (CISI). On their website, the CISI says about themselves: “The CISI is the largest and most widely respected professional body for the securities and investment profession in the UK and in a growing number of financial centres globally. We promote the highest standards of professionalism amongst our members and the wider financial services profession and we believe professionalism is a blend of three elements – Knowledge, Skills and Behaviour.”

Costs can be checked here https://www.cisi.org/cisiweb2/cisi-website/study-with-us/getting-started/price-list

I’ve highlighted the Asset Servicing Technical Module which costs GBP 230, however this has to be combined with the Introduction to Securities and Investment module which costs GBP 230 as well and possibly (?) with the International Introduction to Securities and Investment, also GBP 230. So minimum would be around GBP 500.

But there are more companies where you can follow courses in order to prepare for the exams.

Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)

Many people working in corporate actions who want to raise their game, combine their daily job with studying for financial analyst. Working in a corporate actions environment will give you a good foundation to make the next step in the securities industry, because it deals with all aspects of it. A CFA certificate is globally acknowledged and it will help raising your chances to get a better job. It’s not easy though!!!

 Once again, there are several companies via which you can get courses in order to prepare yourself for the exams that are being taken at set times during the year. These exams are global and only a predetermined percentage will pass.

If you’ve taken courses via a company that you would like to recommend, please send an email to Marco.Meijer@corporate-actions.net

A Summary on their website says;

Corporate Actions is a specialist field which is often misunderstood, despite its often negative impact on profits and investment values. This course explains how corporate actions are calculated, their impact on companies and the reason they occur in the first place.

Understanding the “life cycle of a corporate action” is essential to understanding why losses are often so high in this crucial area of banking and investing. We break corporate actions in to stages and look at the controls and procedures that can be put in place to reduce and even eliminate costs
